An update from Waste Management ( (WM) ) is now available.

On May 13, 2026, WM announced that its board promoted longtime executive Tara Hemmer to executive vice president and chief operating officer, succeeding John Morris in the COO role while she continues to oversee recycling, renewable energy and other sustainability businesses. Hemmer, who joined WM in 1999 and has led its sustainability growth strategy, will receive increased compensation and a multi-year restricted stock unit package as she assumes responsibility for the company’s operating platform and more than 47,000 frontline employees.

The company also disclosed that Rafael E. Carrasco, senior vice president of enterprise strategy and president of WM Healthcare Solutions, notified WM on May 8, 2026 that he will retire effective July 17, 2026 after a decade in senior operational roles. Carrasco, credited with leading the Stericycle acquisition and integration that underpins WM’s medical waste and Shred-it growth platform, will see his healthcare solutions business report directly to President John Morris following his departure, signaling both leadership continuity and a tighter alignment of WM’s core and healthcare operations.
