Medallion Financial ( (MFIN) ) has provided an update.

As of March 31, 2026, approximately 3% of Medallion Financial Corp.’s consolidated borrowings, totaling $73.5 million, consisted of SBA debentures issued to its subsidiary Medallion Capital, Inc., providing long-term, fixed-rate funding at relatively low cost. On that date, Medallion Capital submitted a management team for review to the SBA’s licensing division, but shortly afterward the SBA declared an event of default on the debentures, finding Medallion Capital lacked a qualified management team and directing it to identify and submit at least one additional qualified candidate for a full-time principal and investment committee role within 120 days.

The SBA’s default notice does not trigger cross-defaults under Medallion Financial Corp.’s other debt agreements, limiting immediate spillover risk for the parent company’s broader capital structure. However, if Medallion Capital fails to meet the SBA’s requirements, the agency may accelerate repayment of the debentures and accrued interest or pursue other remedies under the Small Business Investment Act of 1958, which could raise funding costs and pressure liquidity, even as Medallion Capital continues working to supplement its management submission and asserts that, with the planned changes, it will have a qualified team.

The most recent analyst rating on (MFIN) stock is a Hold with a $8.50 price target. To see the full list of analyst forecasts on Medallion Financial stock, see the MFIN Stock Forecast page.

Spark’s Take on MFIN Stock

According to Spark, TipRanks’ AI Analyst, MFIN is a Neutral.

The score is driven primarily by reasonably strong financial performance with some volatility risk, supported by very attractive valuation (low P/E and strong dividend). These positives are tempered by weak technical momentum (below key moving averages with negative MACD) and earnings-call risks around credit costs and potential margin pressure despite constructive growth guidance.
