Hokuriku Electric Power Company ( (JP:9505) ) just unveiled an update.
Hokuriku Electric Power Company reported that its 700,000 kW Nanao Ohta Thermal Power Station Unit 2 automatically shut down on December 30, 2025, after protective equipment reacted to an abnormality in the main transformer. An internal inspection found melted copper conductors and major damage, which the company believes was caused by lightning-induced dielectric breakdown, and restoration will require extensive transformer repairs, with operations expected to resume in spring 2027.
To prevent recurrence, Hokuriku Electric plans measures including stronger lightning arresters and will rely on other thermal and hydroelectric plants to secure sufficient supply capacity during the outage period. The company estimates a negative impact of about 20 billion yen on fiscal 2026 earnings due to higher procurement costs for alternative power sources, though it maintains that power supply to customers will be maintained and will update the market if further material developments arise.
