GMO Internet to Exit Loss-Making Thai Digital Asset Business

GMO Internet has decided to withdraw from the digital asset business in Thailand conducted through its consolidated subsidiary GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics (Thailand), reflecting a strategic review of its group portfolio and the challenging environment in the Thai digital asset market. The exit will be executed either by selling all shares in the Thai unit held by GMO Internet and its Thai holding subsidiary or by winding down, dissolving, and liquidating the business, marking a retrenchment from a loss-making overseas crypto operation that has yet to achieve sustained profitability despite asset growth.

The Thai subsidiary, established in 2018 and majority-owned together with GMO-Z.com Holdings (Thailand), had been providing digital asset deposit, withdrawal, and remittance services but has posted consecutive annual losses, underscoring the difficulty of scaling this segment under current market and regulatory conditions. The withdrawal is expected to streamline GMO Internet’s operations, reduce exposure to the Thai digital asset market, and potentially allow the group to reallocate capital and management resources toward more profitable or strategically aligned businesses within its broader internet services portfolio.
