BP ( (BP) ) has provided an update.

BP reported first-quarter 2026 results on 28 April, showing a sharp rebound to a $3.8 billion profit attributable to shareholders and underlying replacement cost profit of $3.2 billion, up from $1.5 billion in the prior quarter. The improvement was driven by strong upstream reliability at 95.7%, higher production in the Gulf of America and at bpx Energy despite Middle East disruptions, and refining availability of 96.3%, alongside an exceptional oil trading contribution and stronger midstream performance.

Operating cash flow reached $2.9 billion after a $6.0 billion adjusted working-capital build in a rising price and seasonal inventory environment, while net debt rose to $25.3 billion and dividends were maintained at 8.32 cents per share. Strategically, BP agreed to sell its Gelsenkirchen refinery, which will lift its structural cost-reduction target to $6.5–7.5 billion by 2027, and it plans to cut hybrid bond financing to about $9 billion by end-2027, moves that the new CEO frames as strengthening the balance sheet, simplifying the portfolio and positioning BP as a more resilient, higher-return energy player committed to lower operational emissions.

The most recent analyst rating on (BP) stock is a Buy with a $58.00 price target. To see the full list of analyst forecasts on BP stock, see the BP Stock Forecast page.

Spark’s Take on BP Stock

According to Spark, TipRanks’ AI Analyst, BP is a Neutral.

The score is mainly held back by weaker financial performance (near break-even reported earnings and higher leverage despite solid cash flow). Technical trends are supportive with strong momentum and price above key moving averages, while valuation is a drag due to the very high P/E despite an attractive dividend. The latest earnings call was moderately positive on execution, cost reduction and balance-sheet priorities, but impairments and the buyback suspension temper confidence.
