BHP has appointed veteran steel executive Mark Vassella as a Non-executive Director, effective 1 June 2026, adding more than four decades of global steel and materials value chain experience to its board. Vassella, the former CEO and Managing Director of BlueScope Steel, began his career as a cadet at BHP Newcastle and has held senior roles across Australia, the UK and the US, as well as serving on the WorldSteel Association Board.

The company highlighted Vassella’s track record in running large industrial operations and his emphasis on safety, decarbonisation and disciplined capital allocation, along with his reputation for building constructive relationships with governments, Indigenous partners, communities and business stakeholders. Chair Ross McEwan said his appointment strengthens BHP’s focus on global resource development and values-based leadership, signalling continued attention to community engagement and sustainability at board level.
