ams-OSRAM ( (CH:AMS) ) has shared an announcement.

ams-OSRAM is expanding its Digital Photonics and microLED portfolio from automotive lighting into data-center infrastructure, aiming to leverage its award-winning EVIYOS micro-emitter technology beyond headlamp applications. By repurposing its industrial-scale microLED manufacturing know-how, the group seeks to capture new growth in AI server and networking markets where energy-efficient, high-bandwidth optical links are becoming critical.

The company has unveiled a microLED array prototype optimized for so-called slow-and-wide optical interconnects in AI data centers, featuring cutoff frequencies above 1 GHz and energy use below 2 picojoules per bit. These components enable highly parallel, short-range optical I/O that target one of the biggest bottlenecks in modern AI systems: the rising energy demand for data transmission within and between server racks.

Building on the EVIYOS platform, ams-OSRAM adapts its microLED–CMOS integration to create optical transceivers using singulated microLEDs, each feeding its own fiber channel in multichannel light-wave-guide cables. The company reports data rates of at least 3 Gbit/s per channel over 10-meter links with very low bit error rates, promising high bandwidth density while staying within stringent performance and reliability requirements.

The shift to a slow-and-wide architecture, replacing single ultra‑fast laser links with hundreds of parallel microLED-based channels, is positioned as a more efficient and thermally favorable approach for AI infrastructures. ams-OSRAM highlights benefits including graceful degradation via redundant channels, reduced power and heat versus ultra-high-frequency lasers, and simpler system design thanks to inherently parallel links that avoid complex serialization stages.

With the prototype validated, ams-OSRAM is moving quickly into product development for optical I/O solutions tailored to AI data centers, aligning the effort with its broader Digital Photonics strategy announced earlier this year. The move underpins management’s ambition to strengthen the company’s presence in the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure segment, potentially diversifying revenue beyond its traditional automotive and industrial bases and reinforcing its standing in next-generation data communication components.

The most recent analyst rating on (CH:AMS) stock is a Hold with a CHF7.50 price target. To see the full list of analyst forecasts on ams-OSRAM stock, see the CH:AMS Stock Forecast page.
