ByteDance, the Chinese company behind TikTok, is facing regulatory actions in China after allegedly breaking national laws. Authorities in the country claimed that some of the company’s platforms have failed to properly label artificial intelligence (AI) content. The warning comes as the government tightens the rules around AI content to ensure more transparency for users.

ByteDance Compliance Issues Identified Across Key Platforms

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said on April 28 that some of ByteDance’s platforms have failed to apply content identification measures, thereby breaching the country’s cybersecurity laws. These platforms include its video-editing apps Jianying and Maoxiang and its AI website, Jimeng. 

As such, authorities in Beijing have summoned those involved, demanded corrections, and issued a formal warning to the private company. Although details of the warning were not disclosed, regulatory officials from the CAC confirmed that the firm was truly penalized. 

Stricter Enforcement Signals Broader AI Push

The warning issued to ByteDance shows that China is actively improving its regulations concerning AI-related content. Regulators explained that platforms must follow labeling rules to ensure users can tell when content is AI-generated. 

These rules were first introduced in March 2025 and were enacted in September. The purpose of these rules is to help China regulate AI development and ensure user safety in the country. 

Authorities also noted that the government will continue to monitor firms to ensure they follow the AI content ID rules. This is to protect the public from the risk of misinformation, fraud, and harmful content spreading online. It also helps ensure steady and responsible growth in the AI sector.
