BREAKING: Historic Win For Anthropic As Judge Throws Out Pentagon’s National Security Designation

Anthropic has secured an early court win against the Trump administration after a U.S. federal judge granted an injunction blocking the Pentagon order that labeled the company a national security supply chain risk. The designation, which had never been used against an American company before, barred federal contractors from using Anthropic’s technology. With the initial ruling in Anthropic’s favor, the case is now set to proceed as the broader legal dispute continues.

Anthropic Wins Early Court Ruling Against Pentagon

On Thursday, Judge Rita Lin of the Northern District of California ordered the Trump administration to revoke Anthropic’s designation and nullify its directive requiring federal agencies to cut all ties with the company. During proceedings, Lin said the government’s actions looked like “an attempt to cripple Anthropic,” arguing that the orders had violated the company’s free speech protections.

In her 43-page ruling, Lin described the measures as “broad” and concluded they did not appear tied to any genuine national security objective, finding instead that they were aimed at punishing Anthropic for its position. She went further, writing that nothing in the governing statute supports what she called the “Orwellian notion” that an American company could be branded a potential adversary simply for disagreeing with the government.

Anthropic Speaks Out After Injunction Ruling

Following the ruling, Anthropic expressed relief. A company spokesperson said the court’s swift action was welcome and that the court found it likely to succeed on the merits. The spokesperson added that while the legal battle was necessary to protect Anthropic, its customers, and its partners, the company’s priority remains collaborating with the government to ensure Americans have access to safe and reliable AI.

Judge Lin placed her ruling on hold for seven days to allow the Trump administration time to seek an emergency appeal before it takes effect. Despite the pause, her written opinion made clear that the Pentagon violated Anthropic’s First Amendment rights and due process rights. The White House has not yet commented on the ruling.
