What Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon May Invest in OpenAI
Nvidia, which already supplies the chips used to run OpenAI’s AI models, is reportedly in talks to invest up to $30 billion. Microsoft, a long-time partner of OpenAI, is discussing a smaller investment of less than $10 billion.
Amazon, meanwhile, would be a new backer and is considering a much larger commitment—well over $10 billion, and possibly more than $20 billion. Sources added that Amazon’s potential investment may hinge on separate talks. Possible parts of the talks include expanding OpenAI’s cloud server agreement with Amazon and allowing OpenAI to sell products like enterprise ChatGPT subscriptions through Amazon.
The report further stated that OpenAI is said to be close to receiving term sheets from these companies.
OpenAI Seeks Fresh Funding as AI Costs Surge
OpenAI is struggling with rapidly rising costs tied to training and running its AI models, especially as competition intensifies from Alphabet (GOOGL) and other major tech players. Building larger, more capable models requires massive computing power, specialized chips, and expanding data-center capacity—all of which come at a growing price.
As competitors pour billions into their own AI platforms, OpenAI needs more capital to stay competitive, keep building new models, and scale its business.
Interestingly, the funding talks come just days after reports that rival Anthropic could raise as much as $20 billion in a new round that would value the company at $350 billion.
