U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell have warned major Wall Street banks about risks linked to Anthropic’s new artificial-intelligence model, Mythos. The system’s ability to identify cybersecurity vulnerabilities could prove to be a ticking time bomb for the financial sector if exploited by bad actors.

A closed-door meeting, discussing the new Mythos AI, took place on April 7 at the Treasury Department in Washington. It included executives from Bank of America (BAC), Citigroup (C), Goldman Sachs (GS), Morgan Stanley (MS), and Wells Fargo (WFC). Additionally, JPMorgan Chase (JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon was invited but could not attend.
The meeting focused on the April 6 preview of the Mythos model, which showed detection capabilities that could be exploited by bad actors. Anthropic introduced Mythos this week, following a major leak just days earlier. The company stopped short of a public release, emphasizing that broader access could lead to unplanned security threats.
Bessent and Powell did not accuse Anthropic of any wrongdoing. Rather, they were more concerned about the dangers that could arise from powerful AI models easily finding system vulnerabilities. Representatives for the Treasury did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A Federal Reserve spokesperson also declined to respond.
Regulators Push Banks to Prepare for Emerging Financial Risks
The recent meeting on Mythos is a major sign that regulators view advanced AI-driven cyber threats as an increasing risk in the financial sector. All the banks invited are systemically important, meaning their stability is critical to the global financial system.
To limit the risk of AI exploitation, Anthropic has restricted public access to Mythos to a small group of technology and finance partners, including Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), and JPMorgan Chase. These firms are part of Project Glasswing, which aims to secure critical systems before similar frontier AI models become widely available.
