Be Careful What You Say on GameChat as Nintendo Might Be Listening

Video game company Nintendo (NTODF) quietly updated its privacy policy ahead of the Switch 2’s launch on June 5, 2025. In this update, the company notes that it may record audio and video from GameChat. This is the new party chat feature available to subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online who also own a Switch 2.

How much audio and video Nintendo will record remains to be seen. GameChat didn’t receive the warmest reception when it was revealed in the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. Not only does it require a camera that’s sold separately to be fully utilized, but the video chat between users is limited with its low resolution and framerates.

It’s unclear who GameChat is for as the services it provides are lacking compared to free options, such as Discord, Mumble, or TeamSpeak. For example, it only supports 12 audio participants at a time, is limited to confirmed friends, and only allows four video participants at once. Users also aren’t tied to their TVs, as the Switch is a hybrid handheld/home console, allowing players to switch to more convenient devices for video calls, such as PCs or smartphones.

Will GameChat’s Weakness Hinder Switch 2 Sales?

While GameChat may be a lackluster option compared to other voice and video chat services, it’s unlikely to affect the success of the Switch 2. Analysts have high expectations for the video game console and preorders have largely sold out ahead of its launch next month.

Is NTDOF Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold?

Turning to Wall Street, the analysts’ consensus rating for Nintendo is Moderate Buy, based on six Buy, one Hold, and one Sell ratings over the last three months. With that comes an average NTDOF price target of $85.83, representing a potential 2.47% downside for the shares.
