Earlier today, Amazon’s (AMZN) AWS introduced DeviceLayout.jl, which is a new open-source software package designed to simplify the creation of quantum chip layouts. Built by the AWS Center for Quantum Computing, the tool helps researchers and engineers design superconducting quantum processors. With DeviceLayout.jl, teams can use code to describe the components of a chip, arrange them automatically using floorplanning tools, and generate accurate layouts for fabrication. Since everything is written in code, it’s easy to track changes, share designs, and scale up from small projects to complex processors.

What makes DeviceLayout.jl especially useful is how well it works with Palace, which is AWS’ electromagnetic simulation software. After laying out the chip, DeviceLayout.jl can generate a full 3D model using Open CASCADE. It precisely includes all features based on the process design kit. The software then builds a simulation-ready mesh using Gmsh, a powerful meshing tool. Each part of the model is labeled and grouped by physical meaning, so that when it’s time to simulate in Palace, everything is already organized. This allows researchers to run simulations without manually configuring every detail.
Together, DeviceLayout.jl and Palace form a powerful toolchain for designing and testing quantum hardware. Researchers can design layouts, run simulations, and even loop these steps into optimization routines within the Julia programming environment. This setup not only saves time but also makes it easier to scale up designs, experiment with new ideas, and collaborate across teams. By open-sourcing these tools, AWS is making it possible for the broader quantum research community to speed up innovation and move closer to building fault-tolerant quantum computers.
