Pentagon Expands AI Deals Without Anthropic

The Pentagon confirmed today that it reached agreements with seven firms within the AI sector. These include three private companies—OpenAI, SpaceX, and Reflection AI—and four public companies, including Google (GOOGL), Nvidia (NVDA), Microsoft (MSFT), and Amazon (AMZN) through its Amazon Web Service (AWS) platform.

According to reports, these firms will deploy their AI tools across the DoD’s most secure networks, called Impact Levels 6 and 7. These systems handle highly sensitive and classified data. Hence, only trusted and safe AI systems are allowed to operate on them.

The agreement will allow military personnel to use advanced AI tools for planning, logistics, and targeting. The Pentagon also said its main AI platform, GenAI.mil, has been used by 1.3 million personnel since launching in January 2026.

This move is part of a broader strategy to increase the Pentagon’s access to commercial AI tools instead of relying on a single platform. By working with multiple companies, the agency aims to reduce “vendor lock,” a situation where it depends on only one supplier.

Anthropic Left Out Amid Ongoing Legal Disputes With the DoD

Despite being one of the fastest-growing AI firms, Anthropic was left off the Pentagon’s list of partners. The move comes after the agency labeled the company a national supply chain risk earlier in March. This suggests that the recent exclusion may be tied to the ongoing legal dispute connected to Claude AI’s use in autonomous weapons and spying.

Currently, Anthropic’s AI tools are banned by the Pentagon and its contractors, even though they were widely used across the department in the past. However, some staff have been reluctant to switch tools as they believe Anthropic’s systems are more advanced than the rest.

Despite this tight situation, there are signs that relations between the two parties might improve. U.S. President Donald Trump recently made positive remarks about Anthropic, saying the firm was “shaping up.” This came after the company’s CEO, Dario Amodei, met White House officials to discuss the new Mythos AI model.
