Anthropic Leaks Internal Code and Accidentally Wipes Out 8,000 Repos in Frantic Clean-up

Anthropic is being criticized after a large number of GitHub repositories were taken down following its Claude code leak. The incident occurred when the company was trying to remove the leaked code, but it ended up disrupting many unrelated projects. Developers and users are concerned about how the company manages its operations and protects user data privacy.

Anthropic Triggers Mass Repository Removals After Code Leak

The issue began when the internal code that backed Claude was accidentally added to the released software, giving developers and competitors access to how the company’s strongest AI model was built. The leaked code became widespread shortly after the incident, and Anthropic requested a formal takedown of the repositories containing the leaked materials under U.S. copyright law.

However, the request took down about 8,100 repositories, including legitimate forks of Anthropic’s public code, far more than intended. Developers whose projects were temporarily blocked are frustrated about the situation since their projects did not directly contain the leaked code.

Anthropic Reverses Action as Repositories Get Restored

Anthropic announced shortly after the takedown that it was unintentional and quickly took steps to fix the situation. The removal requests were limited to one repository and 96 related forks that actually contained the leaked code, while GitHub restored access to the others.

Developers and users are worried about how the private company handles internal and external processes after recent events. These concerns result from the company’s competition with large companies like OpenAI and Alphabet (GOOGL) in the AI space. Mistakes of this scale could affect trust among users, developers, and partners who rely on stable access to shared code and should be avoided.
