Amazon-backed (AMZN) AI firm Anthropic (PC:ANTPQ) just introduced Claude Haiku 4.5, a new small artificial intelligence model that is both faster and cheaper than previous versions. In fact, the company says that Haiku 4.5 can even beat larger models that were top of the line only a few months ago. In coding tests, it performed on par with Claude Sonnet 4, which is Anthropic’s midsized model, and OpenAI’s GPT-5, according to the SWE-bench Verified benchmark. “It punches way above its weight,” Anthropic’s Chief Product Officer Mike Krieger told CNBC.

For paying customers, Haiku models cost about one-third as much as Sonnet models, while Sonnet is one-fifth the price of Opus, the firm’s largest model. Free users can still access Sonnet 4.5, but Krieger explained that Haiku 4.5 gives them more capacity since it is smaller and faster. He even admitted that he prefers using Haiku on mobile because of how quickly it delivers answers, even if Sonnet is smarter overall.
Interestingly, Anthropic designed Haiku and Sonnet to work together. Sonnet 4.5 can break down complicated tasks into multi-step plans, while Haiku 4.5 can carry out the smaller pieces, thereby making them especially useful for businesses. Krieger gave the example of Haiku scanning large streams of financial data and then handing off early insights to Sonnet for deeper analysis. Thanks to Anthropic’s ability to improve its models very quickly, the company has been able to scale up to more than 300,000 businesses and achieve an annual revenue run rate of nearly $7 billion.
