Amazon-backed (AMZN) AI firm Anthropic has introduced a new tool called Cowork that’s designed to make its Claude Code product easier to use, especially for people who are not programmers. More specifically, the tool lets users select a folder on their computer that Claude can read from or edit, thereby making it possible to work on files through a simple chat interface. Anthropic says that this setup allows people to complete coding and file-related tasks as easily as chatting with a coworker.

What makes Cowork different is how much control it gives Claude to carry out tasks on its own. Instead of just responding to messages, Claude can plan out what needs to be done, work through the steps, and update the user along the way. Interestingly, Anthropic explained that Cowork is built on the same foundation as Claude Code, which means that it can handle many of the same jobs, but in a way that feels more natural and approachable.
This makes it useful not just for coding but also for other work that involves managing files and projects. The company said that Cowork is now available in a research preview through its macOS app to Claude Max subscribers. It’s worth noting that Cowork builds on the success of Claude Code, which has become one of the company’s most popular products. The new tool also arrives as Anthropic continues to grow rapidly. In fact, the company is reportedly close to raising $10 billion in a new funding round that would value it at about $350 billion.
