AMD Stock Pops on HP CEO’s ‘Trust Your Friend’ Comment

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) stock was up on Monday after CEO Lisa Su and HP (HPQ) CEO Enrique Lores described the ongoing partnership between the two companies. The interview with Fortune highlighted the history of AMD and HP, including how Su and Lores communicated to build a strong partnership during a rough period.

That partnership resulted in HP adding AMD CPUs to its commercial line of products, instead of just its enterprise offerings. This was a major change at the time, as the commercial computer market was largely dominated by Nvidia (NVDA) and Intel (INTC), leaving little room for AMD. However, that bet paid off, and AMD’s CPU market share now sits at 32.2%. The company has been less successful in the GPU market, with only a 6% share.

With artificial intelligence (AI) increasing the demand for server products, both AMD and HP have strived to gain a foothold in the sector. Lores commented on this during the interview when he said, “When you have a friend, you trust your friend, and when you are doing new things, it’s important to have that level of confidence. When you go through problems, which also happens, it’s also good to try to have trust in the other side.”
