AMD Stock Falls Despite New Redstone AI Details

Story Highlights

AMD stock was down even after it provided updates on its Redstone AI tech.

AMD Stock Falls Despite New Redstone AI Details

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) stock was down on Wednesday despite talk from the company about spreading its Redstone artificial intelligence (AI) upscaling technology to its competitors’ platforms. Specifically, this could allow AMD’s Redstone to be used on Nvidia (NVDA) cards. It would do so through software capabilities, as AMD doesn’t have dedicated cores for AI on its graphics cards. This is different from Nvidia, which includes AI-specific cores for its graphics cards.

AMD doesn’t currently plan to offer its AI upscaling technology on other platforms. However, it could do so in an effort to increase its reach to users. This path would make sense, as Nvidia is currently beating it in the AI race, with more users choosing its graphics cards for AI tasks. The same is also true of the consumer market, as Nvidia holds a larger share of those customers.

Interestingly, the ability to spread its AI capabilities to rival cards makes AMD stand out in a way that Nvidia can’t. Nvidia’s DLSS requires tensor cores to work, meaning there’s no way it could run on an AMD card. Not that Nvidia needs to, given its dominance of the sector. Even so, it does highlight the different design philosophies of these two companies.

AMD Stock Movement Today

AMD stock was down 1.33% on Wednesday but remained up 31.08% year-to-date. The shares have also rallied 8.21% over the past 12 months. Like NVDA, AMD stock has seen major gains in 2025 due to the AI boom, which has increased demand for their products. AMD has also dedicated itself to increased manufacturing in the U.S. in light of ongoing trade wars and tariffs.

Is AMD Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold?

Turning to Wall Street, the analysts’ consensus rating for AMD is Moderate Buy, based on 22 Buy and 12 Hold ratings over the past three months. With that comes an average AMD stock price target of $188, representing a potential 18.77% upside for the shares.
