Anthropic’s Claude AI Gets Major Compute Boost from Amazon

The new agreement provides Anthropic $5 billion upfront, with an additional $20 billion to follow later if it meets specific commercial milestones. The deal also gives the AI firm access to up to 5 gigawatts (GW) of computing capacity to train and run its Claude AI models, including significant Trainium3 capacity expected to come online this year.

The overall commitment covers Trainium2, Trainium3, and Trainium4, as well as the option to purchase current and future versions of Amazon’s Trainium AI chips as they become available. Additionally, Anthropic said the deal will also expand deployment across Asia and Europe to support Claude’s growing demand.

Anthropic Expands AWS Deal to Meet Claude’s Surging Demand

Anthropic acknowledged that rising consumer demand had strained its existing systems, affecting reliability during peak hours. The private company noted that the expanded Amazon agreement is designed to address this issue, allowing it to effectively manage its demand and supply dynamics.

To further cement this relationship, Anthropic confirmed it will continue to rely on AWS as its primary cloud and training provider. In addition, the company said the full Claude platform will be made available directly within AWS.

This means customers will be able to access Anthropic’s tools using their existing AWS accounts, billing systems, and security controls. More than 100,000 businesses already run Claude models on the platform, making it one of the most widely used AI model families on Amazon Bedrock.
