AI Traffic Overtakes Human Activity Online as Automation Reshapes the Internet

A new report from cybersecurity firm Human Security says AI and automated systems now drive more internet traffic than people. The firm found that automated activity grew about eight times faster than human use in 2025.

According to the report, AI-driven traffic rose 187% from January to December. This growth is tied in part to tools from companies like Alphabet (GOOGL), OpenAI, and Anthropic, as more users rely on AI for search and daily tasks.

“The internet as a whole was created with this very basic notion that there’s a human being on the other side,” said Human Security CEO Stu Solomon. “That notion is very rapidly being replaced.”

At the same time, the report defines automated traffic as any activity generated by software systems rather than direct human input. This includes AI chatbots, web crawlers, and background tools like autofill.

Rise of AI Agents and Market Impact

In addition, one of the fastest-growing segments is AI agents. These are tools that act on behalf of users and complete tasks on their own. Traffic from such agents rose nearly 8000% in 2025, though it started from a low base.

This shift suggests that more online actions are now handled by machines instead of people. However, experts note that measuring bot traffic is not exact. Indiana University professor Filippo Menczer said estimates depend heavily on the data sample and method used.

“They depend on what sample you get,” he said. “They are depending on where the measurements are coming from.”

Looking ahead, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince recently said bots made up about 20% of traffic before the rise of generative AI. He expects AI-driven traffic to surpass human activity by 2027.

For investors, this shift may reshape how internet companies track usage, ad demand, and security risks. It may also boost demand for cloud services and cybersecurity tools as machine-driven activity grows.
