Anthropic, the private company behind the Claude AI chatbot, is preparing to expand its London, U.K., workspace by adding a new office to accommodate up to 800 employees. The firm made this announcement today, shortly after its rival company, OpenAI, announced plans to establish its first permanent office in the city. This underscores the longstanding heated rivalry between the two companies, especially as the U.K. strengthens its position in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) space.

Anthropic plans to expand its U.K. workforce from 200 to 800 employees as it prepares to open an additional London office. The new office will be located in the Knowledge Quarter, which is widely known as home to other AI companies, including its rival, OpenAI, Meta Platforms (META), and Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Class A (GOOGL).
Pip White, Anthropic’s head of EMEA North, stated that the company is expanding its services in London because the city has many talented individuals and firms that understand the importance of AI safety. Building in the city will also allow the private company to grow its services in one of its most important research and commercial hubs outside the U.S.
U.K. Push Follows Policy Support and Rising AI Competition
Anthropic’s planned London expansion comes shortly after reports that U.K. officials sought to strengthen engagement with the company, following tensions linked to its dispute with the Pentagon over requests for unrestricted access to its AI systems. The developments highlight the U.K.’s efforts to solidify its position in global artificial intelligence development.
At the same time, Anthropic has drawn significant attention after introducing its new AI model, Mythos, which can reportedly identify weaknesses and security flaws in systems faster than most humans and other AI systems. The private company is now taking precautionary measures to prevent misuse of the AI tool by preventing public access until risks are mitigated.
