Algorand was created by Silvio Micali and launched in 2019. This decentralized block-based network offers key features including security, scalability, and efficiency. Based on the Proof-of-Stake (Pos) mechanism, Algorand aims to deliver faster transaction times (a key deficiency of Bitcoin) and keep transaction fees low. The Algorand Virtual machine (AVM) supports smart contracts with turing-complete languages enabling the development of next gen applications at scale.
