Why Growth for OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mobile App May Have Peaked

A new analysis by Apptopia suggests that growth for OpenAI’s (PC:OPAIQ) ChatGPT mobile app may have peaked, according to a TechCrunch report. Since April, the number of new global downloads has slowed down, and daily active user growth has leveled off in recent weeks. Although October isn’t over yet, Apptopia expects an 8.1% month-over-month decline in global downloads for the AI firm. It’s worth noting that this analysis focuses on growth trends, not the total number of downloads, as ChatGPT is still seeing millions of installs per day.

However, user engagement appears to be slipping. In the U.S., the average time spent per user has dropped 22.5% since July, and the number of sessions per user is down 20.7%. This implies that people are not only spending less time in the app but also opening it less frequently. Despite that, user churn has stabilized, meaning that the app is holding onto its core users instead of losing them right after a quick test run.

Interestingly, several factors may be contributing to this slowdown. Google’s (GOOGL) Gemini, a rival AI tool, gained momentum in September with the launch of its image model, Nano Banana, which could be pulling attention away. Still, Apptopia notes that declines in engagement metrics started even before Gemini’s rise. Therefore, it believes the drop in both time spent and session count indicates that the app is being used mostly when needed, as experiments from when the app was new have decreased.

Is Google Stock a Good Buy?

Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on GOOGL stock based on 30 Buys and eight Holds assigned in the past three months. Furthermore, the average GOOGL price target of $258.81 implies that shares are trading near fair value.
