UPS plane that crashed was repaired in September, was 34 years old, WSJ says

The UPS (UPS) cargo plane that crashed was 34 years old and had a fuel-tank repair in September for a crack, The Wall Street Journal’s Esther Fung, Benjamin Katz, and Drew FitzGerald report. One of the jet’s engines detached during takeoff and was found on the ground at the Louisville, Kentucky, airport. The MD-11 has the second-worst safety record of any commercial aircraft still in service, according to industry data. The Tuesday crash killed at least 12 people and is still under investigation. UPS says it is working with the NTSB and FAA on their investigation of the incident and has halted operations at its Worldport package-handling hub in Louisville.
