UnitedHealth (UNH) joins the growing group of companies and wealthy individuals who are using legal threats and lawsuits to deter or penalize criticism, David Enrich of NY Times reports. Mary Strause, a filmmaker in Wisconsin, posted a docuseries criticizing the U.S. health care industry, but found her video taken down from Amazon (AMZN) and Vimeo after UnitedHealth sent a letter warning the companies that the video was defamatory. In recent months, the company has targeted traditional journalists and news outlets, a prominent investor, a Texas doctor, and activists who complained about a UnitedHealth subsidiary, invoking last year’s murder of Brian Thompson to argue intense criticism of the company risks inciting further violence.
