Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI is unsatisfied with some of Nvidia’s (NVDA) latest semiconductors for generative AI and has looked for alternatives since last year in a move potentially complicating the relationship between the two companies, Reuters’ Max A. Cherney, Krystal Hu, and Deepa Seetharaman report, citing eight sources familiar with the matter. The ChatGPT maker’s strategy change comes amid an increasing emphasis on chips used to perform specific elements of AI inference, the authors say, noting that the move also marks a significant test of Nvidia’s AI dominance and comes as the two firms are in investment negotiations.
