Closing Bell Movers: UnitedHealth jumps 10% as Berkshire, Appaloosa buy weakness

In the opening hour of the evening session, U.S. equity futures are mixed: S&P 500 is flat, Nasdaq 100 is down 0.2%, while Dow Industrials are up 0.4%, propped up by strength in its UnitedHealth (UNH) component.  In commodities, WTI Energy is down slightly after a bounce during regular market hours toward $64 per barrel.   Metals are also seeing modest weakness, with Gold and Silver both down by a decimal below $3,380 and just above $38 per ounce respectively.

Rate sensitive sectors such as Homebuilders were sold off as hotter than expected wholesale PPI inflation dented expectations of a more aggressive Fed ease.  Healthcare was among the best performing sectors in the S&P 500 yet again however and will likely remain firm on Friday with UnitedHealth being bid strongly afterhours on 13F filing disclosure of new stakes taken in the name by Berkshire and Line Pine.  Semiconductor equipment is expected to trade softer however – Applied Materials was down sharply afterhours on soft guidance, also dragging down Lam Research and KLA Corp.

• Nucor (NUE) up 6.0% as Berkshire discloses new stake in 13F
• Twilio (TWLO) up 4.5% after entering S&P MidCap 400

DOWN AFTER EARNINGS –

• Applied Materials (AMAT) down 14.0%; Lam Research (LRCX) down 6.5%, KLA Corporation (KLAC) down 7.0% in sympathy
• SanDisk (SNDK) down 9.8%
• Globant S.A. (GLOB) down 7.2%

ALSO LOWER –

• Gambling.com (GAMB) down 15.9% after equity offering
• Nutex Health (NUTX) down 5.1% after Q2 pre-announcement
