Tech and Consumer Discretionary – cyclical areas of the market that have powered the S&P 500 this year – were once again the worst performing sectors on Thursday. For the former, valuation concerns against the relentless AI infrastructure buildout spending continued to punish the recent winners – Nvidia (NVDA) was down another 4% and has now fallen over 10% from the highs as the company prepares to release its earnings later this month. Sentiment around the latter remains weighed down by concerns around a slowing economy and outsized job losses – in the absence of government data, investors focused on the release by Challenger Gray showing the biggest job loss in the year through October since 2003.
