Following the blow up of Syndey Sweeney’s ad campaign with the company, American Eagle (AEO) Outfitters’ CEO told staff to hold tight and to not pull any ads, Suzanne Kapner of The Wall Street Journal reports. In one ad, Sweeney said, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.” Some people called the double entendre racist, others called is sexist, and some marketing experts believed the culture-war uproar would drain the company’s sales. Instead, American Eagle’s sales improved following Sweeney’s campaign and saw sales growth turn positive in August.
