Stock Market News Today, 12/16/25 – U.S. Stock Futures Slip Ahead of Key Payrolls Data

U.S. stock futures slipped early Tuesday as investors awaited November’s nonfarm payrolls data, which could sway markets today. Futures on the Nasdaq 100 (NDX), the S&P 500 (SPX), and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) were down 0.75%, 0.49%, and 0.26%, respectively, at 3:14 a.m. EST on December 16.

During Monday’s regular trading session, the three major indexes closed lower amid rising pressure on AI-related stocks like Broadcom (AVGO), Oracle (ORCL), CoreWeave (CRWV), and Microsoft (MSFT). The Nasdaq fell 0.59%, the Dow dropped 0.09%, and the S&P 500 declined 0.16%.

Tuesday’s key economic reports include the U.S. unemployment rate, S&P Global flash U.S. manufacturing and services PMI, and delayed U.S. retail sales and nonfarm payrolls. Economists polled by Dow Jones predict nonfarm payrolls grew by 50,000, down sharply from the 119,000 jobs added in September. They also see the unemployment rate coming in at 4.5%, up from 4.4% in September.

No major earnings releases are scheduled today.

Notably, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was down, floating near 4.16%. WTI crude oil futures were trending lower, hovering near $56.46 per barrel as of the last check. Additionally, the Gold Spot U.S. dollar price decreased to nearly $4,287 per ounce on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, European indexes opened mostly higher on Tuesday in anticipation of central bank interest rate decisions and regional inflation data.

Asia-Pacific Markets Fall

Asia-Pacific markets declined on Tuesday, tracking Wall Street losses amid AI sector concerns.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index plunged 1.61%. In China, the Shanghai Composite dropped 1.11%, while the Shenzhen Component fell 1.28%. Meanwhile, Japan’s Nikkei declined 1.56%, and the Topix lost 1.78%.
