Harness, a leader in AI DevOps, has released a pivotal report highlighting a significant visibility crisis in AI-native application security. As enterprises integrate AI into their operations, many are losing track of AI usage, leading to increased security vulnerabilities. The report, ‘The State of AI-Native Application Security 2025,’ reveals that 75% of security professionals believe shadow AI now poses greater risks than shadow IT, with numerous organizations already experiencing security incidents related to AI. This underscores a critical shift where shadow AI reflects a loss of oversight as AI applications proliferate, complicating security teams’ efforts to manage tool sprawl and maintain effective communication with development teams.

The study, based on insights from 500 security practitioners across the US, UK, France, and Germany, indicates that AI sprawl is outpacing control, with 74% of respondents predicting it will surpass API sprawl in terms of risk. Furthermore, 82% see AI-native applications as a new target for cybercriminals, and 63% consider them more vulnerable than traditional IT applications. Harness’s Field CTO, Adam Arellano, emphasizes the need for security to be integrated throughout the software lifecycle to maintain visibility and control. To address these challenges, Harness recommends a proactive approach, including shared governance between security and development, real-time monitoring, and dynamic testing of AI components. This strategy aims to build resilience against AI-specific threats and protect sensitive data, ensuring enterprises can innovate securely.
