Microsoft (MSFT) Invests in New Energy Projects in Latin America and Europe

Tech giant Microsoft (MSFT) is investing in new solar projects in Mexico, Brazil, and Spain in order to lower its carbon footprint and help local communities. In Latin America, the company is partnering with Powertrust to support 270 MW of solar capacity over the next four years. These projects will be built across Mexico and Brazil and will generate Renewable Energy Certificates that Microsoft will purchase to offset its electricity use.

Notably, Microsoft Energy Director Danielle Decatur noted that the partnership will help build clean-energy infrastructure that improves life in regions that currently lack access to low-carbon power. In addition, both Microsoft and Powertrust emphasized that the projects will create jobs and offer worker training. Powertrust CEO Nick Fedorkiw also stated that the deal shows how major companies can support the environment while strengthening communities, especially through smaller solar projects that provide clear, direct benefits.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Microsoft signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement with Spanish developer Zelestra for nearly 96 MW of solar energy from two projects in Aragón. This electricity will help power Microsoft’s local data centers and support a Community Fund managed by the NGO ECODES that hopes to strengthen education, infrastructure, and sustainability programs. As a result, all of these deals support Microsoft’s plan to match 100% of its electricity use with zero-carbon energy by 2025 and become carbon negative by 2030.
