Jeff Bezos has taken a formal role as co-chief executive at Project Prometheus. The move marks his first direct post at a firm since he left Amazon (AMZN) as chief executive in 2021. The New York Times reports that the new firm works on AI tools for the design and build of computers, cars, and craft for space. However, the report has not been confirmed yet.

Large Funding and a Clear Aim
Project Prometheus has raised $6.2 billion from backers. Part of the sum comes from Bezos. The size of the round puts the firm among the best-funded new AI firms in the world. As a result, the firm begins with a wide pool of cash for staff and gear.
The firm aims to use AI to help with real-world building tasks. The plan is to help teams cut the time and cost to shape parts and test new forms for machines. In turn, the firm seeks a place in a part of AI that works on the link between code and tools in plants.
A Growing Team and a Crowded Field
Project Prometheus has nearly one hundred staff members. Many come from top AI labs such as OpenAI (PC:OPAIQ), DeepMind, and Meta Platforms (META). In time, the group may build a strong set of skills for new build tech.
The field is still tight. OpenAI, Google (GOOGL), and Meta Platforms spend large sums on AI for broad use. Yet Project Prometheus seeks a niche in AI for the building of gear, which may give it room to grow. Even so, the firm will need strong gains to stand out in a fast and loud space for AI tools.
