The lawsuit alleges that Samsung and Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Google worked together to discourage use of alternative app stores on the former’s devices. The two working together would make sense, as Samsung’s smartphones use Google’s Android operating system.
While it’s unclear why Samsung agreed to a settlement, it likely has to do with Apple (AAPL). Epic Games also sued Apple over its removal of Fortnite from the App Store. However, a judge ruled in Epic Games’ favor, resulting in the eventual return of the popular battle royale game to iOS devices. Samsung likely saw how that case ended and determined an ongoing legal battle with Epic Games wasn’t worth it.
What Does the Epic Games Settlement Mean for Consumers?
Epic Games’ legal battles with Apple and Samsung highlight an ongoing push for consumer rights, including alternative app store options. This is a major deal as smartphone companies have long pushed for control of their ecosystems. That’s doubly true on iOS devices, which Apple maintains a firm grip on.
While Epic Games’ lawsuits with Apple and Samsung are over, the results of them could bolster further legal complaints from other companies. The Epic Games and Apple lawsuit could be cited in those cases, helping erode the restrictions smartphone makers integrate into their devices.
