Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile S.A. (SQM) is a global company engaged in the production and distribution of essential products for industries such as health, nutrition, renewable energy, and technology, with a strong focus on lithium, potassium nitrate, iodine, and thermo-solar salts markets.
In its latest earnings report for the first half of 2025, SQM announced total revenues of $2,079.3 million, a decrease from the previous year. However, the company reported a net income of $226.0 million, a significant turnaround from a net loss in the same period last year. The company highlighted record-high iodine sales prices and a strong pricing environment in its specialty plant nutrition and potassium businesses.
Key financial metrics revealed a 12.6% decline in revenues compared to the same period in 2024, while gross profit decreased to $558.3 million. The lithium and derivatives segment saw a 21.8% drop in revenues, attributed to lower market prices and contract limitations. Despite this, the company expects a 10% growth in sales volumes from its Salar de Atacama operations. The completion of the Kwinana refinery in Australia marks a strategic milestone, with anticipated production of 50,000 tons of battery-grade lithium hydroxide annually.
The iodine and derivatives segment showed resilience with a 3.3% increase in revenues, driven by strong demand for X-ray contrast media applications. The specialty plant nutrition business remained stable, supported by robust potassium chloride pricing. Potassium revenues, however, declined significantly due to reduced sales volumes, although prices remained strong.
Looking ahead, SQM’s management remains optimistic about the company’s ability to navigate the volatile pricing environment, leveraging its diversified portfolio to capture growth opportunities in the lithium market while maintaining solid performance across other business lines.
