Global Cyber Warning

As part of one of its regular updates to users, Apple sent a new round of cyber threat notifications to clients in 84 countries.

These warnings are issued when tech companies determine that they may have been targeted by state-backed hacking groups.

According to Reuters, Apple’s statement, which said the warnings were issued on December 2, carried few further details about the alleged ‌surveillance and did not address questions about the number of users targeted or say who was believed to be carrying out the surveillance.

Industry experts said hallmarks of a state-backed campaign include high sophistication, narrow targeting, and the use of methods not commonly deployed by cybercriminal groups.

State Threats Are Rising

The lack of information is also said not to be surprising, as public disclosures could tip off hackers about its detection capabilities or risk exposing users.

Sometimes the exposure can be self-afflicted. Back in August this year, Apple moved quickly to patch a zero-click vulnerability that could have allowed attackers to compromise iPhones, iPads, and Macs without the user even clicking a link. The flaw, which was tied to the way Apple devices process images, left a dangerous opening for attackers to steal sensitive data, including cryptocurrency wallets.

According to the latest State of Information Security Report from IO, 88% of cybersecurity and information security leaders surveyed at UK and US organisations now express concern about state-sponsored cyberattacks.

It is also of huge concern to tech providers like Apple. As such its Ability to Sell based on brand and reputation is a key risk both for it and investors – see above.
