Anthropic Raises $13 Billion at Massive Valuation

Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude chatbot, just raised $13 billion in a Series F funding round, which was far more than earlier reports suggested. As a result, this new investment pushes the company’s valuation to $183 billion. The round was led by ICONIQ and co-led by Fidelity and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Other major investors included funds connected to BlackRock (BLK), Blackstone (BX), Coatue, General Atlantic, and more.

According to Anthropic’s CFO, Krishna Rao, the company is seeing explosive demand from both large corporations and AI-focused startups. Indeed, he said that their customers depend on Anthropic’s technology for essential business operations, and the funding shows that investors are confident in Anthropic’s strong financial performance and future growth. Interestingly, it is worth noting that Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees and is backed by big tech names like Amazon (AMZN), Google (GOOGL), and Salesforce (CRM).

In addition, since launching Claude in March 2023, Anthropic’s revenue run-rate has passed $5 billion, and the company now has over 300,000 business customers. Notably, the number of clients spending over $100,000 per year has grown nearly sevenfold in the past year. What makes the new valuation even more impressive is that earlier this year, Anthropic was valued at $61.5 billion after a $3.5 billion round led by Lightspeed. Therefore, the valuation has essentially tripled since then.
