The decision marks a rare retreat for Amazon in brick-and-mortar retail. Despite its big push, foot traffic and economics never matched the hype. The experiment that once looked like the future of grocery shopping is now over.

Whole Foods Steps In as Amazon Doubles Down Online

Not all sites will vanish. Amazon said five Fresh stores will be converted into Whole Foods Markets, tying back into the U.S. chain it bought in 2017. Whole Foods carries stronger brand recognition in groceries, and Amazon sees more upside in leaning on that playbook.

At the same time, Amazon plans to accelerate its online grocery business. It highlighted surging demand across Amazon.co.uk, Amazon Fresh online, Whole Foods Market, and partnerships with Morrisons, Co-op, Iceland, and Gopuff.

Same-Day Delivery Is Amazon’s Competitive Edge

The pivot isn’t just about cutting losses. Amazon will launch perishable groceries with same-day delivery in 2026, building on the everyday essentials it already delivers. This expansion could reframe the online grocery landscape in Britain, challenging Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Ocado in the battle for speed and convenience.

Amazon Fresh’s checkout-free technology was hailed as a breakthrough when it arrived in London in 2021. But scaling it proved harder than expected.
