Spring Health has introduced VERA-MH, an open-source framework designed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of AI chatbots in mental health care. Developed in collaboration with a diverse group of healthcare, technology, and ethics leaders, VERA-MH aims to establish transparent and clinically grounded standards for AI tools providing psychological support. This initiative responds to the increasing reliance on AI chatbots by nearly half of U.S. adults for mental health assistance, highlighting the urgent need for regulatory safeguards and clinical oversight.
The VERA-MH framework sets clear criteria for assessing AI systems’ ability to recognize and appropriately respond to signs of crisis or suicidal ideation, ensuring escalation to human clinicians when necessary. Dr. Mill Brown, Chief Medical Officer at Spring Health, emphasized the importance of creating a benchmark to prevent tragedies linked to improper AI use in mental health. The framework will remain open to feedback from clinicians, researchers, and AI developers during a 60-day Request for Comment period, encouraging global collaboration to refine and enhance the evaluation. By publishing VERA-MH and its data openly, Spring Health seeks to foster transparency and drive responsible innovation in the mental health AI sector.
