RECESS, the Resilience and Equity in the Clean Energy Sector Summit, has formally separated from its founding convenor and established itself as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit, a structural shift that enables year-round programming and broader fundraising to advance equity in the clean energy economy. The organization also confirmed that its fourth national summit, themed “Mission: Possible – The Regenerative Power of Clean Energy,” will be held September 27–29, 2026, at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center.
Originally launched in 2023 by Carla Walker-Miller as a conference platform, RECESS will now use its nonprofit status to deepen its impact by centering Black, Indigenous, Brown, and other historically underrepresented communities as leaders in the energy transition, while expanding access through reduced- or no-cost participation for more than half of attendees. Building on last year’s 600-plus participants from 28 states and abroad, the 2026 summit will convene students, entrepreneurs, workforce leaders, policymakers, and industry executives to address topics including clean energy workforce development, AI applications in energy, battery storage, virtual power plants, grid-scale and community projects, data centers, and the climate–health nexus, with the explicit goal of converting dialogue into actionable, community-driven solutions.
