PuriFire Energy Gains EU-Backed Funding for WoodVALOR Circular Bioeconomy Project

PuriFire Energy has shared an update. The company announced that its WoodVALOR project has secured funding from the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU). WoodVALOR focuses on converting contaminated waste wood into higher value products, including high-performance paints, coatings, biochar, acrylic acid, fatty acids, and bio-based binders, using advanced decontamination, fractionation, and hydrothermal processing technologies. PuriFire will specifically produce phenolic monomers from decontaminated lignin via hydrothermal liquefaction and biochar via hydrothermal carbonisation, with the phenolic-based biomaterials feeding into bio-acrylates for water-based latex paints, and the biochar used for bioremediation and carbon sequestration.

For investors, the CBE JU funding serves as third-party validation of PuriFire’s technology and business model in the circular bioeconomy space. Non-dilutive public funding can help de-risk R&D and scale-up activities, potentially extending runway and reducing the need for near-term equity capital. Participation in a 11-partner, 6-country consortium may enhance PuriFire’s access to industry networks, IP development opportunities, and future commercial partnerships, particularly in the decorative coatings and environmental remediation markets. If WoodVALOR’s processes prove scalable and cost-competitive, PuriFire could gain a differentiated position in waste-to-value technologies and bio-based materials, aligning with tightening EU sustainability regulations and growing demand for low-carbon industrial inputs. However, the financial impact will depend on the size of the grant, the timeline to commercialisation, regulatory approvals, and the company’s ability to convert project outcomes into recurring revenue streams from licensing, product sales, or joint ventures with coatings manufacturers and environmental services providers.
