Charlie Health has appointed Ashok Balakrishnan as Chief Technology Officer, signaling a material step-up in its technology, data, and AI strategy as demand grows for its virtual high-acuity behavioral health services. Reporting to CEO and Co-Founder Carter Barnhart, Balakrishnan will oversee the scaling of Charlie Health’s technology infrastructure, with a mandate to improve care personalization, operational efficiency, and platform reliability for health systems, payers, referral partners, and clients nationwide.
The hire comes as Charlie Health’s virtual Intensive Outpatient Programs expand across 40 states, requiring more robust digital capabilities to support clinicians and manage increasing volumes of high-acuity behavioral health cases. Drawing on more than 25 years in technology and his prior role as CTO at K Health, where he built an AI-enabled primary care platform deployed in health systems, Balakrishnan is expected to lead the integration of AI and machine learning into Charlie Health’s outcomes-focused care model, with implications for scalability, clinical quality, and payer partnerships.
