OpenAI has become a core strategic asset for Amazon Web Services (AWS) after Amazon committed roughly $50 billion to secure access to its models, a move AWS leadership frames as essential to remaining competitive in cloud-based artificial intelligence. With OpenAI already tightly aligned with Microsoft as its primary cloud provider, AWS’s decision reflects the risk of ceding high-value AI workloads if it did not offer OpenAI’s technology to its own enterprise customers.
AWS CEO Matt Garman told an audience at the HumanX conference in San Francisco that working with OpenAI alongside Anthropic, another major AI partner in which Amazon has invested about $8 billion, is consistent with Amazon’s long-standing strategy of partnering with companies it also indirectly competes against. He emphasized that AWS will integrate OpenAI models into its broader AI routing and orchestration services, where customers can automatically select among multiple models—including OpenAI’s—for different tasks based on performance and cost, creating a path for AWS to promote its own models while still relying on OpenAI as a marquee offering.
