Smurfit Westrock ( (SW) ) has shared an update.
Smurfit Westrock will permanently shut one of its paper machines at the La Tuque mill in Quebec, removing 127,000 tons of annual solid bleached sulfate capacity that has struggled with scale and cost inefficiencies. As part of the same move to bolster the competitiveness of its paperboard and SBS portfolio, the company will also close its Pointe-aux-Trembles extrusion facility, which processes grades from the La Tuque machine.
These closures will lead to a limited workforce reduction of about 30 employees at La Tuque and around 60 at Pointe-aux-Trembles, with Smurfit Westrock pledging severance, career transition support, and relocation opportunities where possible. Management framed the decision as difficult but necessary to align with current market realities while maintaining its commitment to Canadian operations and sustaining reliable, quality service for customers.
