An announcement from Pinedale Energy ( (TSE:MCF) ) is now available.
MCF Energy reported initial testing results from the Welchau-1 exploration well in Austria, where it holds a 25% economic interest alongside operator ADX Energy. The company recovered hydrocarbon gas and light oil from the Reifling Formation during well unloading, and analysis of these samples is underway to better assess the reservoir’s potential.
Testing indicated insufficient inflow for stable production, suggesting the initial small-scale acid treatment did not reach the necessary fracture network in the marly limestone reservoir. The well has been suspended to monitor pressure build-up and fluid inflow, while ADX evaluates a larger acid stimulation that could improve connectivity and unlock the formation’s productivity.
The nature of the recovered hydrocarbons supports a revised structural interpretation that a light oil column may lie about 500 metres updip within the crest of the Welchau anticline. Evidence of an overpressured system and lack of biodegradation further points to a potentially significant updip oil accumulation near existing infrastructure, with additional deeper gas potential in the broader Welchau structure.
